I guess we have seen in movies a lot villains trying to take over and control the world. Either they are aliens or some being with unique super powers that could fly and create massive destruction.
In real life, there is also this destruction of the world. It is not caused by any superalien or something but by "us", the people living within it. That would make us the villains, though some people do not yet find out that they are the villains. If we are the villains, then who are the super heroes? We still are.
Most people believe that we are facing an ecological crisis. Some animals had become endangered and some even had become extinct. Horrific statistics about the state of the earth worsens every year. Many people are aware of the situation and are worried over this. Most of the blame for the worsening situation are the different plantations that discharge harmful and toxic waste products which causes a permanent damage to nature either by air, land or water. Some people forget that even we,ourselves are big contributors to the ecological crisis. Most people aren't yet aware that even in the most ordinary thing they do, the whole ecological cycle is affected.
One chemistry teacher once shared to our class. "Imagine yourself throwing a plastic trash in the ocean, then an innocent fish swimming in the ocean becomes trapped inside. What if that was the last fish in world?" I know its kinda an exaggeration but its true. If we were to relate that situation in real life, that would be people throwing their trashes on the sea causing for it to die, including the fishes and organisms that live in it.
Aware of it or not, each of us are contributors to the ecological crisis, even though how innocent-looking we may be. We may be just doing just simple things but we must also bear in mind that each individual is a part of the large puzzle.
We must be terrified with all the news and statistics we hear and see but we must also remember that no superhuman would show up and clean all the mess that we have made. It's really hard to rejuvenate the world in which the inhabitants themselves are the destroyers.

Energy From Trash
Trash, Materials recovered from curbside collection, drop-off centers, and material recovery facilities must be separated, cleaned, and processed. Trash-to-energy facilities are integral pieces of municipal infrastructure. These facilities serve two social purposes - they safely manage municipal solid waste for our client communities, while generating electricity. Waste Management is a complex issue for a community. Improper waste disposal could result in serious health problems for the entire population. Trash/Waste Management has 33 methane plants across the nation. OPPD will own the plant, and Waste Management will operate it.
Trash-Free Lunch: Designate a day each week to have students/teachers/staff members bring their lunch and drinks in reusable containers, in a reusable bag, including a cloth napkin. Involve students and staff in designing a logo to have printed on their usable lunch bags to sell in the school store. Waste prevention will help Oregon businesses be more profitable ? and competitive ? while reducing environmental burdens. Wastewater from approximately 47 percent of Vermont’s population is treated at wastewater treatment facilities, and septic systems serve the remainder of the state’s population. Of the nearly 22 million gallons of septage pumped annually in Vermont, more than half of it (58 percent) is transported to wastewater treatment facilities, where it is treated and results in the generation of biosolids.
Communities controlled prices for garbage disposal, and assured a steady source of fuel for their plants. However, the Supreme Court struck down the contracts that allowed cities to control the flow of garbage to their plants, leaving them more vulnerable to competition from cheaper landfills.

Types of Alternative Fuels
1. Ethanol is usually made from corn or biomass (agricultural biological waste). Methanol can be made from various biomass like wood or from coal. Ethanol, a liquid produced from grain or agricultural waste, usually is sold as a blend of 85 percent denatured ethanol and 15 percent gasoline. Ethanol had a dream that was sold that didn't necessarily have all the fundamentals, as it's dependent on the price of feedstock. However, the risk with geothermal is that people will say, "Well, it can only do 50 megawatts.
Ethanol is also available as an alternative fuel. E-85 is an alternative fuel blend containing 83% ethanol in the summer and 70% ethanol in the winter. Ethanol refueling sites can be found predominantly in the Midwest, close to the major supplies of ethanol. Efforts by DOE are underway in Minnesota to help construct a number of ethanol refueling sites.
2. Hydrogen, as an automotive fuel, is in the early stages of experimentation and development. Future hydrogen powered vehicles may produce tailpipe emissions that approach zero. Hydrogen can be used to cleanly power a modified internal combustion engine or a fuel cell vehicle with electric drive motors.
3. Electric vehicles are eco-friendly because they don't produce tailpipe emissions, although the generators producing the electricity used to charge EV batteries do emit pollutants. However, these pollutants are considered to be minimal when compared to the usage of gas. Electrical energy can be made by burning oil, coal, solid waste (rubbish), biomass, or other fuels. Or, electricity can be made without burning anything - by using the energy of the wind, the sun, or flowing water (more on electricity ). Electricity can be used as a transportation alternative fuel for battery-powered electric and fuel-cell vehicles. Battery powered electric vehicles store power in batteries that are recharged by plugging the vehicle into a standard electrical source.
4. CNG is a natural gas comprised mainly of methane, although it also contains small amounts of propane and butane. It is produced during the winning of crude oil or directly from natural gas fields. CNG also offers good availability and easy adaptability for today's automobile internal combustion powerplants. CON: CNG has a lower energy content than gasoline, so vehicles using it can generally only travel about 150 miles per tank.
State and fuel provider fleets are increasing their purchases of alternative fuel vehicles. City and County governments and large corporations may be required to purchase alternative fuel vehicles beginning in 2002. State vehicles outside the Ecogas contract (such as existing vehicles already converted to LNG or CNG, or new vehicles purchased already equipped for natural gas) will refuel at the 76?/gallon price.
Vehicle fuel systems for flex-fuel and dedicated natural gas vehicles are very similar. The main difference is that the gasoline fuel system is left intact on the dual-fuel or bi-fuel vehicle. Vehicles that can use either gasoline/diesel or an alternative fuel (bi-fuel vehicles) are a good transitional step. Soon, fleet use should bring enough demand for alternative fuels to make them as readily available as gasoline -- or as close as your home natural gas or electricity supply.
Vehicles covered by the CLEAR Act include those powered by hybrid engines, dedicated alternative fuels, fuel cells, and electric batteries. Vehicles that have been converted to operate on gasoline and alternative fuel (bi-fuel, must demonstrate ability to run on either fuel). Original equipment manufactured alternative fueled vehicles do not require an alternative fuel certificate. Vehicle storage systems being developed include compressed hydrogen, liquid hydrogen, and physical or chemical bonding between hydrogen and a storage media (for example, metal hydrides). Hydrogen vehicles are only available in a few select areas for small pilot programs.

Are You Drinking Contaminated Tap Water? by Juanita Ruby
Are you drinking contaminated tap water? You might think that public authorities would report that your health is at risk, but the truth is somewhat different. Public facilities, the EPA and other regulatory agencies know that our public supplies have a variety of contaminants. Their primary concerns over the years have been bacterial contaminants and the threat of waterborne illnesses. Their attempts to control these threats include a variety of treatment methods that include chemical disinfection, UV light and ozone. But all of these efforts have increased the number of disinfection byproducts that flow out of our faucets. They call them THMs. Exposure to THM contaminated tap water doubles your risk of bladder cancer. It increases your risk of colorectal cancer by 40%. We are exposed to so many different cancer-causing chemicals on a daily basis. The only way to reduce our risk is to protect ourselves whenever possible. There are wonderful purification devices on the market that remove THMs. But, sadly, there are many companies that fool you with their advertising and marketing. They entice you with their low prices and they are largely ineffective. What else do we need to worry about? How about cyst contaminated tap water? The Environmental Protection Agency has made a point to try and warn people about the risk of cyst consumption. These are tiny parasites in an early stage of development. So, once again, the sources of exposure are numerous. Perchlorate causes dysfunction of the thyroid gland. It was, at one time, used as a drug to treat hyperthyroidism. In those with a healthy thyroid gland, it causes hypothyroidism, decreased function of the thyroid gland that causes numerous metabolic disorders, including obesity and diabetes. If you are concerned about chemically contaminated tap water or cyst contamination, you should invest in a home purifier that removes these things. You don't have to pay thousands of dollars for reverse osmosis or a bunch of Japanese rocks (included in one expensive brand). You need multi-stage selective filtration that costs around $100. You might also be interested in a system for your showerhead, since chemical contaminants like THMs can be absorbed through the skin and inhaled when they become airborne. There are a lot of things that government authorities neglect to tell us about. So, spread the word and stop drinking contaminated tap water, today. You will live longer and be healthier. Science and Environment: From Nothing, to Thing, to Something by Dan Cloer
Almost 55 years have passed since the publication in Nature of Francis Crick and James Watson's description of the structure of DNA. It was on February 28, 1953, that the two Cambridge colleagues actually pulled together the crystallographic and chemical data to form the original model of the double helix. They shared the 1962 Nobel Prize with King's College physicist Maurice Wilkins for their innovative discovery.
Research crystallographer Rosalind Franklin, who had made the key reports and x-ray images from which Watson and Crick gleaned their data, died in 1958 and thus was not included in the Nobel Prize.
In retrospect, the discovery of the structure of the gene was a landmark event in science and environment. But at the time, it was met with skepticism and doubt. The new era of biotechnology that sprang from that initial discovery could have followed the same track as the space program. Man's first step on the moon was hailed as a fantastic moment in the history of technology and exploration in 1969, yet a coherent follow-up remains illusive and piecemeal.
As Watson reminisced at a 2005 Technology, Education, Design (TED) conference presentation, the next few years after their initial discovery remained scientifically lean. Most biologists did not immediately buy the "twisted ladder" as the reality of the gene. But Watson and Crick were confident that they had solved the most basic secret of life: how life begets life.
"We knew we were right," Watson says in his presentation. "From nothing to thing" in about two hours. While they believed that the structure they proposed also solved the multiple riddles of replication, inheritance and evolutionary variability and mutability, Watson recalls that there were only five references to their work over the next few years. The run-up to today's world of burgeoning gene-centric potentials was at first slow.
"We were left by ourselves trying to do the last part of the trio," Watson continues. That trio--the three-step process the cell uses to translate the DNA information into a molecule called RNA and then into working proteins that drive all biochemistry--is the focus of new research into disease and diagnosis.
This is particularly a focus of cancer research. Finding ways to block gene function, to literally interfere with the faulty protein-making process that seems to control cancer cells, would be an ideal way to attack these cells. Rather than blanketing the body with generic therapies such as radiation or toxic chemicals, RNA-based therapies would target the errant cells precisely.
According to a Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory press release concerning recent research published in Science, "These [RNA molecules] can target a specific gene and stop it from being expressed. If the cancerous cells die off, and the same short-hairpin RNA doesn't kill off healthy cells, then the gene it targets is a cancer proliferation and survival gene."
The work has led Gregory Hannon, Ph.D. CSHL professor, Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator and his coauthors to propose a "Genetic Cancer Genome Project" in which geneticists will identify and catalogue cancer type-specific genes with the goal of revealing potential drug targets. The press release continues: "This could mean that the next generation of cancer treatments will include fewer side effects, and be tailored to target certain types of cancer, such as breast or colon cancer, specifically.
"This means that we can investigate thousands of genes at a time which will allow us to comb through the human genome with previously unattainable efficiency,' said Dr. Hannon. 'We have already identified several genes that appear to be selectively required by certain breast cancer cells but not by normal cells.'" The press release concludes that as this new technique is used to discover increasing numbers of cancer proliferation and survival genes associated with different kinds of cancer, it could introduce a new era in cancer treatment. "We have opened a door into a whole new world of cancer treatment possibilities," Dr. Hannon said.
It is certainly something to imagine a world of personalized medicine where the very chemical core of our maladies could be repaired, patched or blocked. While it will certainly be quite some time before these possibilities ever reach the clinic, the process had to begin with understanding DNA. For that, society and culture can be thankful for the work and sacrifice of Rosalind Franklin and for those who used her work to lay the foundation of our genetic century.

Most kinds of reptiles do not tolerate the cold very well. But the Blanding's turtle (Emydoidea blandingii) is sometimes found swimming under the ice in the Great Lakes region of the United States.
Reptiles are among the longest-lived species on the planet. For example, large tortoises such as the Aldabra tortoise can live for more than 150 years. Alligators can live nearly 70 years. Ball pythons, a popular type of pet snake, can live up to 40 years (consider that before getting one as a pet).
Most of the world's snakes (nearly two-thirds) are non-venomous. Only about 500 snake species are venomous, and of those only 30 - 40 are considered harmful to humans. In other words, less than 2 percent of all snakes are considered harmful to humans.
It is a fact that more Americans die each year from bee stings than from snake bites.
With regard to reptile fact #4 above, the opposite is true in Australia. There are actually more venomous snakes in Australia than non-venomous snakes. The inland taipan is one of the most popular of these venomous Australian snakes. Australia is the only continent where venomous snakes outnumber non-venomous snakes.
Certain types of snakes can go months without eating. This is especially true of the big constrictors, such as the Anaconda and the reticulated python. Snakes eat large meals (relative to their body size), and they have much slower metabolisms than we humans have. This partly explains how they can go so long between meals.
"Cold-blooded" is not the best way to describe reptiles. Their blood is not necessarily cold by itself. But they are ectothermic, which means they get their body heat from external sources. Reptiles cannot regulate their body temperature internally as humans do.
Snakes and lizards flick their tongues in the air to capture scent particles. They don't smell through their noses like you and I. Instead, the use their tongues to collect scent particles and then pass the particles over something called a Jacobson's organ to decipher the air around them. This is partly how reptiles hunt for food.
True to its name, the African egg-eating snake (of the genus Dasypeltis) prefers to dine on the eggs of other animals. It will swallow the egg whole, and then use tiny "spikes" extending internally from its spine to crack the egg open and swallow the nutritious contents. Lastly, it will regurgitate the unneeded egg shell in a neatly folded piece.

The Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence (SETI) - Are We Alone in the Universe?
Are we alone in the Universe? Who is out there? Scientists around the world are trying to receive extraterrestrial signals. What do they hope for? What have they found? Where is the evolution of human beings headed?
The Cosmic Radio Dial
290 miles northeast of San Francisco, California, something other worldly is going on.
An array of 350 antennas is being put together at Hat Creek Radio Observatory. This array made of large radio antennae, resembles the one that Jodi Foster's character Ellie worked at, in the screen adaptation of Carl Sagan's book "Contact". Officially it's called The Allen Telescope Array.
Funded mostly by former Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen at a price of $50 million, the SETI Institute, all these years later, is still hot in pursuit of an alien message beamed our way.
SETI researchers believe an advanced alien civilization attempting to communicate with another species, in this case us, would beam a message into space via radio waves. The challenge has been to figure out what radio channel they are transmitting on.
It was put forth by Giusseppe Cocconi and Philip Morrison in a paper appearing in Nature Magazine, that the most reasonable place to send a message would be near the radio-channel of neutral hydrogen. Neutral Hydrogen's cosmic frequency is 1420 mhz on the radio dial. At that frequency there seems to be a minimum amount of background noise and so they postulated, that would be the best place to send a message. So for decades, SETI researchers excited by that possibility have been trying to listen in on the cosmic radio dial at or near that radio frequency to hear if there might indeed be a signal from an extra terrestrial civilization beamed in our direction.
A Species-to-Species Call
During the first 4.5 billion years nothing but silence has emanated from our planet on the cosmic radio dial. Then, during the past 100 years Earth started broadcasting radio and TV signals which have leaked off our planet and out into space.
It is reasonable to assume that if there were an advanced civilization within 100 light years of Earth (as the radio and TV waves travel at the speed of light) listening for messages, the way we are, they would hear our first broadcasts. They might think we are still in World War 1 or 2 if they don't take into account the time it took for the signal to travel there. It makes you wonder if seeing that might give them the wrong impression (or the right one) of our race.
If they were on the ball and sent out a reply to us, depending on their distance from us, it would take up to 100 years for their reply to reach us.
As co-author of the Cocconi-Morrison paper and MIT physicist Philip Morrison said, "It's not a person-to-person call. It's not a station-to-station call. It's a species-to-species call!"
Optical SETI
Dr. Stuart Kingsley, of the Columbus Optical SETI Observatory, has argued for years that if aliens were transmitting a signal toward Earth, they would certainly try to send the signal through pulsed light beacons because using that method, one could store a lot information and have it travel further with less loss of data than one could using radio waves.
His views were found interesting, but due to some hard-nose politics, and a lot of competition for funding, he flew solo on the Optical Search for many years, tirelessly promoting Optical SETI.
His arguments proved to be correct. "After all" Dr. Kingsley said, "we can see that in the future, robots probing Mars will beam back messages via laser beam and that signal will in turn be broadcast in your home via fiber optic. The future is clearly photonic!"
Now, nearly two decades later, his advocacy for Optical SETI has paid off. There are now Optical SETI searches at Harvard, sponsored by the Planetary Society, and at UC Berkeley as well as his own (formerly in Columbus, Ohio now relocated to Bournemouth, United Kingdom).
What Have We Found?
After several decades of searching it's fair to ask, "What have we found?".
The best signal so far came from a former SETI Search Programme at Ohio State University, called "Big Ear". The "WOW Signal" was a signal that appeared to come from an extra terrestrial source but didn't last long enough to be verified by another source. Several attempts to re-acquire the signal were in vain. It's referred to as the "WOW Signal" because the astronomer on duty wrote "WOW" on the paper print-out monitoring the signal.
That's pretty much it.
Sure there are signals all the time, but unless the observers can verify that the signal came from an off-Earth source, they can't officially record anything as a confirmed existence of an extraterrestrial signal.
For that reason, searches are taking place all over the world, in both hemispheres. Some do the key searching, others do the follow ups, if something of interest might be discovered.
So you ask, "After decades, that's it?". Well remember, if the aliens listening to our TV and Radio broadcasts are 60 to 100 years away (and that's considerably close considering the vastness of space), and if they have a response prepped and ready to send immediately without further pause, then that will take decades to centuries to receive a reply, if they choose to reply.
Are They Benevolent?
They may be asking the same thing of us Earthlings, especially if the first signals they received from us are that of World War.
They may choose not to make "Contact" with us until we have solved our problems.
Conversely, our military experts might argue, we may choose not to reply if we receive a confirmed signal from them, as we may not know their intentions. They just may well be hostile. Some argue that a technologically advanced society would have overcome their petty differences and hostilities. Has technology helped us overcome our differences or has it only hastened the killing?
It is hoped that the aliens would be able to offer us cures to our rare diseases and have a Galactic Treasure Trove of knowledge at their fingertips (if they have fingers). Are we so audacious as to hope that they would share that information with us? Have we proven ourselves worthy of such knowledge?
Regardless of intentions, the SETI researchers are not broadcasting (like our Radio and TV stations) rather, they are listening.
Whether they'll release the details of a signal detection is another matter. Are religious institutions and people around the world ready to accept that 'we are not alone'? That we were not created in HIS image?
Arthur C. Clarke said, "If after centuries of searching we still find nothing, then we can consider ourselves to be 'Guardians of the Galaxy!'"

The Gap by Carroll J. Wright, Ph.D.
I can safely say that everything that happens to us has but one single purpose: to awaken us to the truth of our divine nature. How can I say this? Because the finite world experience can never fully satisfy us, rarely more than 50% of the time, even with Herculean effort. This inherent sense of dissatisfaction and frustration sets us up then for asking why there is such a gap between what we have and what we want. This Gap exists because we are asleep, brainwashed, hypnotized, and confused, because we are living in an illusion of limitation, in a very narrow dreamscape, in what we have called the matrix or the trap, in the world of effects.
This unknown Gap is the source of our anxiety. This gap has a built-in guarantee that we call existential anxiety. Without infinity awareness we will never close that gap or rid ourselves of anxiety. That Gap is the source of our fear of the unknown. That Gap contains the secret of being human. Praise God for the Gap, and I don’t mean the hip clothing store. Actually the Gap is where the Infinite and the self meet and join, the place where you transcend idols and the ego. The Gap is where you go at night when you sleep. The Gap is the source of renewable energy. The Gap is the fountain of creativity and intuition. The Gap is the space between every thought, word, sound and musical note. The Gap is what is so often missed “between the lines.†The Gap is where the infinite is alive. The Gap offers us a taste of Eternity when we are “here now.†The Gap is the home we had before we went into exile in matter. The Gap is the pause that refreshes. The Gap is the peace place. The Gap is the paradise we have been looking for in the external finite world. The Gap is what I have called the hidden Third Factor. The Gap is where you need to go when you are hung up in any power struggle or conflict between two opposites, two polarities, two choices. Quantum physics defines the Gap as the non-local unified energy field behind all phenomena. Jesus called the Gap the kingdom of God. The Gap is where the treasure is buried. Is Global Warming Real?
Do you believe in aliens? That life from another planet far away came to Earth to begin life anew. For some this is an explanation of global warming. Beings from another world found themselves faced with the global catastrophe of global warming and their environment began to fail. They packed their bags and traveled to our planet. Is this fact or is it fiction? No one knows for sure. The global warming debate is present in our news and media but whether or not it has something to do with planet-traveling aliens may be something for the Sci-Fi Channel.
It is all around us. It is on the weather stations. It faces us when we decide to purchase a new car or even a cleaning product. The real issues come when trying to learn about global warming. There is a lot of conflicting information on the internet and there is not one group that can agree on all aspects of the global warming debate.
Over the past century, with out a doubt, global temperatures have risen. While the rise in temperature has been only a degree or so, the concern is whether the Earth's temperatures will continue to rise and what impact that will have on the environment. The controversy about the warming of the earth is a result of conflicting evidence.
The fact that global warming also occurred in the prehistoric era is a scientific point. Some think a large meteor hitting the planet caused an big change in the earth's temperature. Is that what killed the dinosaurs? Science cannot prove this conclusively yet. The political and industrial lobbies further complicate conversations about global warming. The contention of these groups is that, we currently do not know enough about the effects of global warming to limit industrial emissions.
The facts about global warming differ according to which group is publishing the information. Unfortunately this translates into a myriad of confusing ideas and theories that the average citizen must muck through in order to determine the truth. Scientists continue to perform studies and monitor global temperatures but until there is a published analysis of the results that is completely definitive, then there will be doubt.

Mercury Pollution
Mercury pollution is a dangerous environmental problem around the world. One way in which people are exposed to mercury is through eating contaminated fish.
Some mercury is natural in the environment.Some comes from our intentional uses of mercury, and some is a polluting byproduct of burning coal and certain mining and manufacturing processes.
ENVIRONMENTAL & HEALTH EFFECTS OF MERCURY
3 most common forms of mercury:
- elemental
- inorganic and
- methylmercury
These three forms of mercury can produce adverse health effects at sufficiently high doses.
EFFECTS ON HUMAN HEALTH:
1. Eating mercury-contaminated fish is the primary route of exposure to mercury for most people
2. Inhaling elemental mercury, the vapor given off when mercury is heated, can also be dangerous
3. Mercury can damage human health because it is toxic to the nervous system - the brain and spinal cord - particularly the developing nervous system of a fetus or young child.
4. Adults who have been exposed to too much methylmercury might begin to experience trembling hands and numbness or tingling in their lips, tongues, fingers or toes. These effects can begin long after the exposure occurred. At higher exposures, walking could be affected, as well as vision, speech and hearing. In sufficient quantities, methylmercury can be fatal.
5. Damage occurring before birth or in infancy can cause a child to be late in beginning to walk and talk and may cause lifelong learning problems. Unborn children can be seriously affected even though the methylmercury causes no symptoms in their mothers.
EFFECT TO THE ENVIRONMENT:
Fish are the main source of food for many birds and other animals, and mercury can seriously damage the health of these species. Loons, eagles, otters, mink, kingfishers and ospreys eat large quantities of fish. Because these predators rely on speed and coordination to obtain food, mercury may be particularly hazardous to these animals.

Inspired Students Inspire A Community
When students at Mira Loma High School in Sacramento, California return to school at the end of this month, they will have more to look forward to than homework. They will have the opportunity to experience science hands on: they can participate in the Arcade Creek Project. Designed as a facet of Mira Loma’s participation in the International Baccalaureate Program (one of sixty schools nationwide with such distinction), five instructors created the student run project to meet the discipline requirements for science and chemistry. Students in the program are required to spend a minimum of forty hours per school year in the field counting birds and fish, mapping bends in the creek, calculating the slopes of riverbanks, analyzing water samples, and generally enjoying the great outdoors—that is as long as your idea of a good time in the great outdoors involves wearing waders and carrying a clipboard. The Arcade Creek Project consists of eleven individual studies that take place in randomly selected sites along the creek which is located just north of the campus in a suburban area of Sacramento County. The studies measure and map the physical dimensions of the creek, determine the degree of erosion along the banks, analyze the water quality, and count species of animals to gauge the health of the creek. Students also remove trash and non-native plants from the creek. They plan to begin reintroducing native plants soon. This active observation of the local land feature has fostered a deep affection for the little creek, an affection that has even moved the students to political activism. When another community group tried to purchase some of the land near the creek to build a parking lot, the students organized a letter writing campaign to put a stop to the development. So far the campaign can be considered a success; the plans for the parking lot have been put on permanent hold. Another branch project encourages students to reach out to their community by participating in Creek Week and the Sacramento Urban Creek Council to help their community recognize the importance of the creek and the role it plays in the health of the ecosystem and community overall. Students in the outreach program visit local elementary and middle schools to raise awareness of the need to protect the environment and have even developed class material for local elementary school students. Their textbook? The Lorax, by Dr. Seuss. In 2004, the project was awarded the Governor’s Environmental and Economic Leadership Award for Children’s Environmental Education by California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. Now entering its sixth year, the Arcade Creek Project hopes to continue to inspire the students of Mira Loma’s IB Program and the residents of their community to protect their local environment. The Search For Natural Gas
We often take the comfort of a warm home in the winter for granted. With the use of natural gas we are able to cook, keep warm and heat water, just to name a few benefits. Natural gas also burns cleaner than any other fossil fuel and has fewer emissions of sulfur, carbon and nitrogen compared to coal as it has no ash particles left after burning.
So what exactly is natural gas and how is it found?
The creation of natural gas began millions of years ago. The remains of plants and animals, or organic materials, that over time became covered with rock, combined with pressure and heat, slowly changed into coal, oil or natural gas. The discovery of the gas came later when humans started to notice these vapors seeping from gaps in rocks and then being ignited by lightening. Watching how the fire burned stimulated interest in capturing such gases and turning them into heat and light.
Extracting natural gas from deep beneath the earth is a complex and often expensive process. Even with modern technology, seeking a natural gas deposit large enough to invest time into drilling and exporting can be quite daunting.
So how is natural gas found? It takes a combination of processes and events – they include:
1.Geological Surveys – Geologists examine the earths surface to determine areas where it is geologically likely that petroleum or gas deposits might exist.
2.Seismic Exploration – Seismic waves are used to examine the earths crust for various underground formations that display potential gas pockets.
3.Onshore Seismology – Seismic waves are picked up by geophones and geophysicists, geologists and petroleum engineers interpret the data.
4.Offshore Seismology – Instead of using trucks and geophones, a ship is used to pick up seismic waves underwater.
5.Magnetometers – Magnetic properties of underground formations are measured with magnetometers, which can detect small differences in the Earth’s magnetic field.
6.Gravimeters – Measuring the Earth’s gravitational field helps scientists gain a better understanding of what is underground. Formations and rock types have a different effect on the gravitational field that surrounds the Earth. This sensitive equipment helps geophysicists analyze formations that lie below the ground.
7.Exploratory Wells – After digging into the earth’s crust, wells are dropped in search of deposits. Because the process of drilling is expensive, exploratory wells are only drilled in areas where other data indicates high probability.
8.Logging- Standard and electric logging consists of measuring and recording physical aspects of a well.
9.Data Interpretation – Raw data alone would be useless without careful and methodical interpretation. Geophysicists use all of the sources possible to make their best guesses as to location of reservoirs.
10.2-D Seismic Interpretation – Two-dimensional seismic imaging uses data collected from seismic exploration to develop a cross-sectional picture of underground rock formations.
11.Computer Assisted Exploration – Computers are used to compile and assemble the geological data using a technology referred to as CAEX, which is short for ‘computer assisted exploration.’
12.3-D Seismic Imaging – Three-dimensional seismic imaging has been one of the biggest breakthroughs in computer-aided exploration. Although costly, $1 million per 50 square miles, it provides more accurate placement of wells to be drilled.
13.2-D Seismic Imaging – This includes generating an image of subsurface geology in the same manner as 2-D data interpretation with the addition of computer technology.
14.4-D Seismic Imaging – A new breakthrough modeling underground rock formation. This technique is an extension of 3-D seismic imaging.

An Alternative Fuel Vehicle story
It seems apparent that the world is heading towards an energy crisis. The meter is heading towards "E" on petroleum and we need an alternative fuel vehicle. Cars can't run on good wishes alone and we need an alternative fuel source that is both economical as well as earth-friendly. One of the options for efficient energy seems to be the hybrid electric vehicle.
Hybrid electric vehicles are a top contender to be the alternative fuel vehicle, replacing the gasoline powered vehicles of today. They are efficient, reliable and becoming most cost effective every day. No wonder they're quickly becoming popular. Besides the "green" factor, the designs of these types of vehicles are also pleasing to the eye - unlike the early clunky looking models.
Popularly known as the hybrid, this alternative fuel vehicle runs on battery electric power and good old fashioned gasoline. It gets much higher mileage per gallon than traditional vehicles and dispels less carbon dioxide to boot. Not only that, this alternative fuel vehicle is being adopted by and large in the marketplace. Most major automotive manufacturers produce at least one hybrid and you can buy them at any new car dealership. Many manufacturers of vehicles are adding hybrids to their line up of available models.
Another benefit to this kind of alternative fuel vehicle is that it will last longer because there's less wear and tear. Alternative energy research has given us a vehicle with a combustion engine that stops running when you enter a traffic jam or slow down considerably and the battery electric engine takes over. This means you won't wear your combustion engine out by taking off or slowing to idle. Instead, you can rely on the dependable and less complex battery engine that gives you better acceleration and torque to begin with. You also get the benefit of recapturing waste energy via the regenerative braking system, which helps minimize pollution.
Like any new technology, hybrids run with a higher price tag than traditional gasoline powered vehicles. At the present time, the lofty price tag of an alternative fuel vehicle would put a hurtin' on any blue collar worker's pocketbook. But for some, the benefits might just outweigh the costs. For instance, the "hybrid premium" is often offset by the payback period wherein the cost is balanced out by a savings on gas over time. Not to mention that most other types of alternative fuel cars depreciate much faster than a conventional car but that isn't the case at all with the hybrid. In fact, studies have shown that hybrid vehicles will actually depreciate at a slower rate than conventional vehicles, making this alternative fuel vehicle a better choice for consumers that want to live a "greener" lifestyle.
A final positive is that the hybrids can also run on other forms of alternative fuel. Vehicle manufacturers can add a flexible fuel engine, or you can just use bio-diesel, ethanol or biogas. This gives hybrids a flexibility that most others in the alternative fuel vehicle category don't have.
After much deliberation and consideration it would appear that the hybrid is the best choice when buying an alternative fuel vehicle. You have the benefit of higher gas mileage and better engine performance. As well as the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions which will help stave off global warming. These benefits make the hybrid a very popular and tangible alternative fuel vehicle, unlike some of the other vehicles in the category.

How Do We Use Petroleum?
Oil and natural gas together make up petroleum. This compound of carbon and hydrogen can be found in many forms. Petroleum literally means "rock oil", which refers to its solid state called asphalt. Petroleum can also be found in two types of liquid form. Crude oil is dark and sticky. It’s called condensate if it’s clear and volatile. Condensate evaporates very easily. In the semisolid state, petroleum is called bitumen. So what is petroleum actually made of? It looks like a simple black gooey mass, but it is actually a mixture of many chemicals, formed by decomposed remains of living things.
Different chemicals can be separated out at refineries and petrochemical plants. Then the chemicals or chemical groups can be made into a huge range of different things. Companies like Western Pipeline Corporation help find the oil, drill it and get it into production so that we can enjoy many of the products we use today. Polyurethane skateboard wheels, impact absorbing helmets and pads, even the polycarbonate case on your laptop are all produced from oil. Petroleum in its thickest form is called bitumen. Bitumen is mainly used for paving roads. Bitumen is also popular in waterproofing roofs. It can be mixed with sand or clay and water to produce what is known as oil sands. Oil sands are similar to tar, but the materials are naturally occurring. Bitumen is a nearly solid form of oil and is very expensive to process into gasoline or other usable fuels. Therefore, oil sands are being mined almost exclusively to extract the oil, convert it into synthetic oil, or it is being refined for other petroleum products, such as plastic.
Crude oil is a form of petroleum that is in a more liquid state than bitumen. It is mostly black or brown, but can also be yellow or green depending on its components. Crude oil from Sudan is black and North Sea oil is dark brown. Oil from Utah is amber while Texas oil is more yellow. "Sour" oils contain more sulfur and need extra processing in refineries. "Sweet" oils are much easier to refine. If someone mentions sour crude oil, they are referring to the heavier oil. Sweet grade oil usually refers to the lighter crude, found in places like Texas.
The lightest hydrocarbon molecules are so volatile that they evaporate very easily and form natural gas. Nearly every oil deposit contains at least some natural gas. Some have so much of these molecules that they are almost completely natural gas. Natural gas is a very clean burning resource that we use to cool and heat homes and businesses. It is used to generate electricity. We use it in many of the products that we utilize daily such as carpet, medicine, medical equipment, plastics and fertilizers.

Time-tested Solutions for Global Warming
Increased global temperature, a rise in the sea levels, extreme conditions of the weather. These are all attributed to a single factor - global warming. Global warming or greenhouse effect has been going on for centuries. For thousands of years, the earth's temperature continues to rise and it's not stopping. Although the catastrophic events are commonly linked with this global problem, scientists worldwide still have uncertainties as to the relation of global warming to these events AND if there's even a definite solution to global warming.
There are two possible solution to the effects of global warming as proposed by experts. It could be in the form of mitigation or through adaptation. Under the mitigation response, several actions are done to alleviate the effects of global warming, if not to totally eradicate it. The steps that could be undertaken in this response are to reduce the consumption of energy and to use appliances that are energy efficient; you could also look for other possible energy sources or alternatives that can be used to replace the present source of fuel. Possible 'other' sources of energy are solar energy (with this, pollution is decreased, thus, global warming could be controlled), wind energy, hydropower, and geothermal power, to name a few. These energy sources are reusable and highly available, not to add that they are clean sources of fuel.
Another solution for global warming is the use of other sources of energy. Other possible sources of energy that can be used are nuclear energy and biofuels. These two can be used to replace fossil fuels that take a much longer time to develop. Nuclear energy, though, is still under much consideration because of its negative effects to people and to the environment. There is no contestation as to the power that nuclear energy would be able to produce that would give electrical power. But as to the safety of this source of power, there is still much debate. Biofuel, on the other hand, is safe, economical and it is easy to produce. Methane is the main biofuel that can be produced from plant and animal wastes, and this proves to be a lot more environment-friendly than burning fossil fuels.
Another step that ingenious minds have created is capturing carbon (in the form of carbon dioxide) and properly storing them for future use. We have a high concentration of CO2 in our atmosphere, so to help in improving the climate, it should be controlled. And when needed, CO2 can also be used together with methane to make biogas. Aside from carbon capture, people have also set up the so-called Geoengineering where the main goal of this form of science is to study the effects and solutions in atmospheric problems.
In the adaptation response, people look for ways on reducing the effects of the problem and addressing the issues on these problems one-step at a time. In mitigation, people are bent on stopping or postponing the effects of global warming. In search for a better term, adaptation is like 'playing it cool' for now then slowly doing some actions to lessen global warming effects. So in adaptation, they have the thought that glaciers are melting anyway even if we stop our consumption of fossil fuels now so why not go on with modern progress? All they have to concentrate on is how to 'cope' with the effects. Both mitigation and adaptation would mean people who would join hands in fighting a common enemy.
Another way to defend ourselves from the ravages of global warming is for concerned lawmakers to create legislations that would ensure the responsible use of what's left of our fossil fuel resources. With this comes the equal responsibility of not using products or taking part in activities that would further ruin our planet's balance.
And, at the end of it all, the best person that could make a difference and help in making the solution for global warming possible would be you. You could start with yourself, and within your home, all the practices that would provide solutions to the worsening condition of planet earth, which is greenhouse effect.
Global warming solutions are not yet thoroughly proven, let alone totally administered. It is an ever-present problem. No matter what we do, it is there and there is no escaping it. And although it will take years, lots of it, before global warming will even begin to become a terrifying threat, still, it wouldn't hurt if we lift a finger now.
